Father Rookey grew up in Wisconsin, where he was born on October 12, 1916. He had twelve siblings and a normal childhood.
He had a Catholic upbringing, and it is therefore not strange that he became a Catholic priest. He joined the Order of the Servite Priests. As a most humble servant, it was the most appropriate order of priests to join.
One can only describe Father Rookey as a miracle child. His life changed dramatically when he lost his eyesight at a very young age. He lost his sight when a firecracker exploded in his face while he and his brother played with it.
The loss of his eyesight had much to do with his journey to the priesthood, especially in regard to his healing ministry. He ministered to people and held healing services all over the world.
After the firecracker exploded in his face, the doctors had no hope for his eyesight. However, his mother’s immovable faith ensured that their daily prayers, using the rosary, prepared the way for his complete healing.
The return of his eyesight—his healing—sealed the deal for his calling into the priesthood. One could safely say that his mother’s fervent prayers also inspired his inspirational prayer life. This is why prayer was such an important aspect of his entire life.
Father Rookey’s ministry was one of serving others with much love and grace. He gave of himself to his fellow man.
He spent much of his time praying deep seated prayers of healing, such as his most heartfelt “Miracle Prayer.” For this reason, he was also called the “healing priest.”
This man of healing walked close to God, and many have attested to the miracle of the “scent of roses” surrounding him or wherever he was present.
Sadly, Father Peter Mary Rookey passed away on September 10, 2014. He passed peacefully in his sleep with his rosary on his chest
